Kona International Airport is approximately seven miles north of Kailua-Kona. Passengers can fly to the other Hawaiian islands, the continental United States and overseas. People who want to travel around the island can take Hele-On buses operated by the Hawaii County Mass Transit Agency.
The public schools in Kailua-Kona are Kahakai Elementary School, Kealakehe Elementary School, Kealakehe Intermediate School and Kealakehe High School. These schools and the charter schools in the area are part of the Hawaii Department of Education. Students in preschool through 12th grade can attend private schools in Kailua-Kona.
